Greg Bertens began realizing his creative vision with Film School back in the late '90s. The band toiled in relative obscurity until Beggars Banquet introduced its beautifully layered, ethereal noise-pop to the world in 2006 with the release of a self-titled full-length. More lineup changes followed (including the addition of bassist/vocalist Lorelei Plotczyk), and the band constructed one of the best shoegaze revivalist albums of the decade, 2007's Hideout. Most of that cast returns for the new Fission, which sees Plotczyk take a front-and-center role as a songwriter and vocalist. Her light and airy (yet slightly demented) pop confections rub off on Bertens, but the band's calling cards — an eerie sense of darkness lurking around every corner, coupled with hypnotic, effects-laden noise — is still present.
