More About

Music fans here and abroad had their fill of easy jokes after Kings of Leon's pigeon-shit debacle from a few months ago, but KOL's abbreviated set wasn't the only notable canceled concert of the past year. Last November, garage rock phenom King Khan never materialized for his performance with the BBQ Show at Off Broadway because he and his tour manager were arrested for drug possession. Khan should make up for any hurt feelings this week with his scuzzy, horn-fueled soul band the Shrines. Where Khan's work with BBQ Show is known for its simple, quick-'n'-dirty minimalism, the Shrines takes inspiration from Phil Spector productions, organ-driven swamp rock and swinging surf-guitar licks. The nine-piece lineup comprises free-jazz players, '60s soul sidemen and, of course, King Khan himself, whose raw-throated exhortations help make his concerts the stuff of legend.
