Grant an Audience
The Sphinx-like Ulysses S. Grant, a general who trusted his horses more than his fellow officers, was the unlikeliest hero of the American Civil War. The outgoing, expansive Dr. John Y. Simon, who devoted his life to editing the Grant papers, was the anti-Grant. Until his untimely death two years ago, Simon's love of history was contagious. This morning at 10 a.m. the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site (7400 Grant Road, across from Grant's Farm) will honor both iconic figures with the Second Annual Ulysses S. Grant Lecture & John Y. Simon Day. This year's speaker is UCLA history professor Dr. Joan Waugh, whose recent tome, U.S. Grant: American Hero, American Myth, received last year's Jefferson Davis Award from the Museum of the Confederacy — so it must be good!
