Women of the West
The story we've been told of the American West has been primarily a male one. We know all about the men who built the railroads, decimated the buffalo herds, warred with and permanently displaced the Native American tribes. We've heard far less about the women who also migrated west to face almost unimaginable hardship, danger and sheer loneliness among prairies and plains that feel oceanic in their immensity. The Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) rights this imbalance with Home Lands: How Women Made the West, a free exhibit that opens Sunday, October 17, and continues through Saturday, January 15, 2011. Home Lands synthesizes women's, Western and environmental history to illustrate how the fairer sex have been at the core of the American West across disparate cultures and through time, and visitors will be guided through four distinctive Western environments created and inhabited by women.
