The Art of Pumpkin

Is there a finer squash canvas than the Halloween pumpkin? These orange orbs can assume the visage of celebrities or presidents, or they can bear words like BOO or SCREAM or, for the surrealists among us, LLAMA. Show off your jack-o'-lantern prowess by participating in the Second Annual Great Pumpkin Carve & Glow at the Moonrise Hotel (6177 Delmar Boulevard). Today from 3 to 6:30 p.m., carvers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join the fun. No need to stop by the pumpkin patch on your way to the Loop — pumpkins, carving implements and basic decorating materials will be supplied. This good-spirited event is a reward in itself, but if you desire recognition for your masterful pumpkinscape, you're in luck: Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories. The pumpkin carving lasts from 3 until 6 p.m., with lighting and judging lasting from 6 to 6:30 p.m. If you can't make the carving session, not to worry — pumpkins may be dropped off in advance. All of the jack-o'-lanterns will be donated to Places for People, a nonprofit that supports adults with mental disabilities. There's no fee to partake in the fun, and complimentary hot apple cider will be provided (other beverages and snacks are available for purchase). For more information, call 314-863-3033 or visit www.moonrisehotel.com.
