Bernard Herrmann transformed the violin into an instrument of pure terror with his score for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. The skree-skree-skree stabbing riff was the sound effect of choice for an entire generation of children when fake-killing their siblings. Imagine what happens when you watch the film in Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org) and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra string section digs into that riff — it'll be a sea of arms air-knifing away. Ward Stare leads the SLSO through two performances of the score to Psycho at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday (October 29 and 30) while the film screens on the big screen behind the orchestra, and patrons are invited to dress as their favorite character from any of Hitchcock's movies (I'm going as rope) — best costume wins a prize pack from this paper, KMOX (1120 AM) and the SLSO. Tickets are $35 to $75.
