With his band the Wandering Sons, the Appleton, Wisconsin-based musician Cory Chisel plays a dark mixture of soul and folk. Even on the innocuously titled "Angel of Mine," swampy bass and unhinged skittering organ cast a black spell over what might have been a simpler honky-tonk tune. Chisel's August LouFest set recalled an unfussy Jakob Dylan: Although he stepped tenderly — as when featuring backup songbird Adriel Harris on the acoustic "So Wrong for Me" — he also riled the crowd with Springsteen-esque rockers such as "Born Again" (which was co-written by Brendan Benson). Both sides of Chisel's songwriting should work well at a small, tension-ratcheting venue like the Firebird.
