Look at the Taint on this Team

The Chicago Cubs are the sort of team that makes a baseball lifer like Lou Pinella announce his retirement effective at the end of the season, and then he goes ahead and walks away with two months left to play — even those who love the game are driven away from it by the taint of the Cubs. Former St. Louis Cardinal (and Pittsburgh Pirate, but who cares about them?) Andy Van Slyke and baseball journalist Rob Rains recount the many and various ways the Cubs have bumbled, stumbled and fumbled their way to a legacy of futility in the new book, The Curse: Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Or Do They?, a fictional account of the Cubs making a successful run to the World Series -- that right there is your tip-off that this is a fantasy wrought from reality. Van Slyke and Rains discuss the book at 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books' downtown location (321 North Tenth Street; 314-436-3049 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is free.
