Hill Country Revue

9 p.m. Saturday, November 20. The Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Street.

As nouveau Southern-rock jam bands go, Hill Country Revue raises serious ontological questions, beginning with: "Why does the band exist?" After all, the group is led by Cody Dickinson, who also plays with the North Mississippi Allstars, a band that's never been shy when it comes to attacking the country blues with the calamitous force of the Skynyrd plane crash. On Hill Country Revue's 2010 release, Zebra Ranch, Dickinson departs from the Allstars' neo-traditionalism by cranking up the British side of blues-rock, notably the heavy guitar god triumvirate of Hendrix, Page and Beck. The Revue even reprises the latter's cover of Don Nix's boogie masterpiece, "Goin' Down." The song sounds like a young Led Zeppelin test-driving the very first Marshall stack — and blowing the speakers to Dixie-fried bits.
