In September, Orgone opened for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the Pageant. The LA band, whose most recent album is this year's Cali Fever, warmed up the crowd with a tight set of sizzling disco-funk. The finest moments of the 45-minute Orgone experience came when vocalist Fanny Franklin joined the band onstage. She shimmied like escaped quicksilver and belted out her leads in a strong voice reminiscent of Donna Summer. The group's mid-set instrumental break was technically impressive and forceful — percussionist Stewart Killen and guitarist Sergio Rios were flamboyant powerhouses — but a bit monotonous. Naturally, Orgone's groove picked back up once Franklin returned to assume vocal duties, and its set ended strong — perhaps because the dance pit in front of them had finally filled in.
