At some point, most sloppy and sloshy Midwestern rock & roll bands admit that they simply won't be the next Replacements. Two Cow Garage missed that memo. The Columbus, Ohio, band's clamorous live show remains a brash, sweaty mess, and on the just-released Sweet Saint Me, the band celebrates its addictions: Cheap Trick, Van Halen and Soul Asylum. On "Sally, I've Been Shot," lead singer Micah Schnabel crafts a raging outlaw anthem, complete with fantasies of taking some lead in the gut. The band sounds like a still-hungry Hold Steady, all classic-rock-riffed-out and racing into the chorus: "The rich boys make sad old men/Let's never make these mistakes again." Fat chance: Two Cow Garage keeps finding ways to make the old rock & roll mistakes sound exciting.
