The Prints of Cherokee Street
St. Louis' largest growth industry is most likely printmaking. In the last decade, as big corporations have moved their headquarters out of the city, scads of hardworking printmakers have set up shop. And rather than compete with each other for your business, they frequently join forces — like today, when more than 40 artists sell their work at a dozen locations during the Cherokee Print League Holiday Sale. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., print artists will be stationed inside a host of venues along Cherokee Street between Louisiana and Indiana avenues, offering their work at reasonable prices just in time for the ChristmaChanuKwanzaa season. In addition to the obvious gift items such as posters and stationery, printmakers often strut their stuff on T-shirts, bags, playing cards, tortillas — you name it. If they can squeeze it through an offset press' rollers or smash a woodblock onto it without damaging the object, they'll print on it. Participating locations include Firecracker Press (2838 Cherokee Street), All Along Press (2712 Cherokee Street), Fort Gondo (3151 Cherokee Street) and the Archive (3215 Cherokee Street).
