The Sting

Evan is a young fiction writer who has created a bit of buzz for himself with his first novel. Into his life swoops the improbably-named Alexa Vere de Vere, a glamorpuss who seems to be made of nothing but buzz. Alexa introduces Evan to the finer things in life -- better meals, better cuts of suits, better accommodations -- and wants nothing in return. Well, she does want one thing: Evan should write a screenplay about the magnificent life of Alexa. He is to be the Boswell to her Johnson, and to do it he must upgrade everything about himself so that he has the appearance of great success, just as Alexa does. Douglas Carter Beane’s As Bees In Honey Drown is a frothy satire about America’s fascination with the sizzle instead of the steak, and how we delude ourselves into thinking appearance equals substance. Stray Dog Theatre presents As Bees In Honey Drown at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (December 2 through 18), with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on the final Saturday, at Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or www.straydogtheatre.org). Tickets are $18 to $20.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Dec. 2. Continues through Dec. 18, 2010
