Chicago-born, Carbondale, Illinois-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Ivas John takes the blues seriously, but his mind and ears are always open. In his early twenties John learned his craft from a couple of semi-blues legends, Martin Albritton (of Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows) and Rip Lee Pryor (the son of Snooky Pryor), but his eclectic range outpaces his teachers. On any given night he'll rev up a Louis Jordan boogie, pay homage to roadhouse masters such as Delbert McClinton and then throw himself into the old-time country blues of the Delmore Brothers. Sure, he can play "Sweet Home Chicago," but between his own muscular originals and his catholic sense of tradition, you'll want to join him in never taking the easy way out of the blues.
