The network of House of God churches, from New York to Florida, is the sacred ground of sacred steel, one of the most spiritually ecstatic and musically innovative of gospel traditions. Led by three brothers (Derrick, Keith and Alvin Lee) and featuring nephew Roosevelt Collier on pedal steel guitar, the Lee Boys mastered the tradition in Perrine, Florida. As one of the youngest sacred-steel ensembles on the secular circuit, the band is as likely to funk up gospel standards as it is to spiritualize Kool and the Gang. Following the trail blazed by Robert Randolph, the band overdrives its amps and extends frenzied solos into the heavens until St. Jimi himself begs to join the party. If Jesus were a hippie, then the Lee Boys would have been his jam band.
