Fans of Jumbling Towers had much to celebrate in 2010. Not only did the quartet resume playing somewhat-regular gigs in St. Louis, but the band also released two rich, layered collections of music. The Kanetown City Rips came first, and the LP imagines a not-too-distant future in which orphaned, mixed-race children are left to rebuild a fallen society. Luckily, the origin story doesn't bog down the music, which features the band's most hip-hop-indebted beats to date alongside Joe DeBoer's bouncy piano lines and more melodically locked-in vocals. The band's love of dance floor-ready rhythms and disorienting grooves continued on the recently released EP Ramifications of an Exciting Spouse, a five-song set that's both more nimble and harder-hitting than its predecessor.
