What the Folk?
Celebration at Big Sur is the left-coast, folk-rock version of its more epochal musical and cinematic predecessor, Woodstock — take that as either endorsement or warning. The folkies descended on the grounds of the Esalen Institute for the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, with the Pacific as backdrop for the performances. Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and the post-Lovin' Spoonful/pre-Welcome Back, Kotter John Sebastian all drop by for some light folk-rockin', but the highlight (historically speaking) is the appearance of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The foursome made it to Woodstock, but Young refused to be filmed, so this is arguably the earliest-known footage of ol' Shakey. Other highlights include the time-capsule shots of the crowd, a hirsute bunch of folks groovin' and flyin' and enjoying a nude sauna.
