Child of the Corn
Cally is a young girl who is at that vulnerable age when the desire to explore the world first manifests. Of course, with a home life like hers, who wouldn't want to find a new life? Her mother, Rose, is a shut-in who fears everything outside her own four walls, and she keeps Cally close by her side. Cally's only relief comes in wandering through the surrounding corn fields, even though that means an occasional brush with the old scarecrow who simultaneously repels and fascinates her. It's on one of these small journeys that she meets Nick, a seductively smooth talker who urges her to run away with him. But where did he come from, and why is he always in the corn? Don Nigro's dark play Scarecrow brings you into the claustrophobic world of a girl on the edge of womanhood, life and maybe a couple of other things not so nice. RS Theatrics presents a staged reading of Scarecrow at 8:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday (January 21 and 22) at Soundstage Productions theater in Crestwood ArtSpace (Watson and Sappington roads; www.soundstageproductions.net).
