After exaggerated reports of hardcore's demise began to circulate in the mid-'80s, Sick of It All crashed the CBGB's scene and became leaders of the next school. Though the quartet has maintained a stable lineup in the past 25 years, its sound has veered from hardcore to punk and back as it bounced from one big indie label to another. The band's ninth album, last year's Based on a True Story, saw Sick of It All move to the metal-centric label Century Media; coincidentally, Story was also its heaviest and hookiest release. The band remains the social conscience of the scene, and riff-driven tunes such as "Death or Jail," "Dominated" and "The Divide" explore the high cost of relationships, whether they're productive or destructive.
