Dreams of Jeannie

After winning a nationwide talent search for the role of Joan of Arc, actress Jean Seberg was burned at the stake by director Otto Preminger and critics alike. She later moved to Paris, leaving one master manipulator for another, when she starred in Jean-Luc Godard's seminal new wave film Breathless. Seberg would eventually marry three times, and each of her husbands became her director. It is oddly fitting then that even in death Jean lives on, now subject to a painter's obsessions. In Jamie Adams' new series Paris Dream'n, Jean appears in her Paris apartment, nude and at the height of her beauty. The artist is always by her side, metaphorically and sometimes figuratively, cast as an androgynous man-child. Paris Dream'nopens with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 28, at the Philip Slein Gallery (1319 Washington Avenue; 314-621-4634 or www.philipsleingallery.com). Adams' work remains on display through Friday, February 25, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 28. Continues through Feb. 25, 2011
