Let's get some seasonal invective out of the way: Brr. Yuck. I'll never be warm again. Where is the plow truck/the salt truck/my scarf/the sun? Sure, railing against the elements can be satisfying for a moment, but nothing beats a tropical retreat in the dead of winter. Luckily, such a getaway exists right here in St. Louis — at the Orchid Show 2011. This popular display, a yearly fixture at the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard), features around 800 beautiful orchids in full bloom. Visit this indoor floral wonderland and be dazzled by the diverse array of orchids (one of the largest collections in the nation). The 2011 show's theme takes its cues from the Maya "long count" calendar, which — according to historians and a particularly horrible John Cusack film — draws to a close at the end of next year. Intermingled among the orchids are pieces of art that reflect the vibrant beauty of Maya and Aztec culture. Works include sketches of ancient Yucatán, ceremonial items, photographs and more. Admission to Orchid Show 2011 is $5 in addition to regular garden admission ($4 to $8; free for children and garden members). The orchids remain on display from Saturday, January 29, through Sunday, March 27. For more information, call 314-577-5100 or visit www.mobot.org.
