Thunder, Enlightening

The sounds of winter are often muted: the soft crunch of footsteps across the cold ground, the swish of sleds down Art Hill, the under-your-breath swearing when people drive like they've never encountered a snowflake before. Give winter an auditory wake-up call with Taikoza at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). The ancient Japanese art of taiko drumming comes alive in this evening of music, dance and stunning pageantry. In a lovely and delicate counterbalance, the members of Taikoza juxtapose roaring drums with ethereal bamboo flutes in a performance entitled Such Sweet Thunder. The majestic history of this art form is further emphasized by the dancers — their bright costumes mirror what you might see at a performance in Japan. Save yourself the cost of trans-Pacific airfare by attending tonight's performance. The show begins at 8 p.m., and doors open for an educational discussion at 7:10 p.m. Tickets for this evening of transcendent music are $18.
