Few performers in the '70s cut a figure quite like Leon Redbone did. Nattily attired in a white linen suit and straw hat, to go along with a thick mustache and dark shades, Redbone looked like a Jazz Age ex-pat on permanent vacation in Panama. His look reflected the throwback quality of his records, which revisited everything from Tin Pan Alley songs to acoustic blues to guitar-based swing music. His breezy interpretations, coupled with his distinctive raspy croon, made Redbone a stand-alone talent amid changing tides of rock and folk scenes. His last album was a live recording from 1992, but Redbone has no shortage of material as he continues to sift through the various editions of the American song book.
