Beat It With Poetry

People talk about being in the doldrums, but what they really mean is “it’s February.” This shorty month seems to drag on for ages, a bleary gray expanse that provides little in the way of diversion. You can shake free of the February funk with a double dose of poetry. Tonight at 8 p.m. at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; www.stlouispoetrycenter.org/observable), Observable Readings presents a dual reading by Lynn Emanuel and Allison Funk. Emanuel breaks the doldrums with poems inspired by cultural heroes such as Gertrude Stein and Krazy Kat; Funk deals directly with joy in her poetry, whether it’s the bliss of familial love or the mysteries of nature. These are women who will shock you sensate again. This evening’s reading is free.
