Matthew Dear is the cofounder of the well-respected Ann Arbor, Michigan, electronic label Ghostly International, whose roster includes artists such as Mux Mool, Gold Panda and Choir of Young Believers. In a sense, Dear is also Ghostly's heart and soul: During the last decade, the producer/DJ/artist has become one of electronic music's most exciting innovators, a talent known for dabbling in synthpop, micro-house, dark-wave, glitch-soul and electro-rock. Dear's latest album, 2010's Black City, sounds just like the title implies; it's a dank, grayscale collection fit for a renegade rave in a grimy warehouse. This weighty atmosphere extends to his remixes, too: Dear's reworking of the xx's "VCR" transforms the tune into a Bowie-esque strut, circa Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). This set at the Koken Art Factory, incidentally, will be with a full band. Curt Becker and Narcosis are also on the bill.
