How can you resist a play set in the deepest green of the English countryside? With characters named Reg, Norman and Annie? We can't. The play in question is Alan Ayckbourn's Round and Round the Garden, and it should suit your purposes perfectly if you're seeking an imaginative escape from the monochrome of a long Midwestern winter. Ayckbourn has been called an English Neil Simon, and the Chekhov-disciple tag has been applied as well, but as the author of more than 70 plays Sir Alan can lay claim to being very much his own man. See for yourself when Black Cat Theatre (2810 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-781-8300 or www.blackcattheatre.org) stages Ayckbourn's two-act comedy. Round and Round the Garden is performed at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (February 11 through 26), and tickets are $20 to $25. The Saturday, February 12, performance offers a more luxe version of the whole experience via the Valentine VIP Champagne dessert event ($45 per ticket), which starts at 6:30 p.m. and requires reservations.
