After releasing its woozy 2005 space-rock opus, Suburban Hymns, the Life and Times solidified itself as a very formidable (albeit somewhat underappreciated) post-rock power trio. It toured both Europe and Japan and shared stages with the likes of Swervedriver, Mono and Pinback. The band's dense sound collages flow together seamlessly on record, but the effects-pedal tap dances and multi-instrumental juggling required by these epics have increased exponentially in concert. The band's solution: Enter fellow Midwest gunslinger, percussionist and keyboardist Rob Smith (from Riddle of Steel and Traindodge, among others). The Life and Times is currently recording as a four-piece, but it will be especially interesting to witness the live percussive flourishes (not to mention charisma and energetic vibe) that Smith adds to the band's already surging rhythm section.
