Reports that Tokyo Police Club has dramatically altered its speed-of-light post-punk between its 2006 debut EP, A Lesson in Crime, and 2010's Champ have been greatly exaggerated. The Toronto quartet still sounds like the Decemberists hijacked the Strokes' gear and crashed a basement show — and the group can still pull off grandiose pop statements in the time it takes to dismantle a bomb. The most significant change on Champ, in fact, is TPC's graduation from a kicking-and-screaming buzz band to indie-rock elders — at an average age of only 24. The opening slot on a Tokyo Police Club tour has been a rite of passage for the likes of White Rabbits, Ra Ra Riot and Maps & Atlases. Now it's another feather in the cap of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, a Springfield, Missouri, band that released its own well-received third album, Let It Sway, last year.
