The adventures of Curious George may be a work of fiction, but in a remote region of the Congo, scientists have uncovered chimpanzee behavior just as thrilling. David Morgan and Crickette Sanz are the directors of the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project, a field study that uses hidden cameras to observe the actions of primates in their native habitat. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Saint Louis Zoo's Living World auditorium (314-781-0900 or www.stlzoo.org), Sanz presents the free lecture "Congo's Curious Chimps" as part of the zoo's Conservation Conversations series. She'll discuss the sophisticated behavior they've observed, such as how the chimps fashion the objects around them into tools to assist in their daily lives. And perhaps most surprisingly, unlike virtually every other wild animal, when the chimps do encounter a scientist in the jungle, how they don't run away, but instead hang around and call over their pals.
