These days, more people than ever accept that comics can be art. Over the years the media has been flooded with articles destigmatizing the four-color funnies, proclaiming that, like jazz, the comic book is one of only a handful of truly American art forms. While jazz is indubitably tied to African American culture, the comic book was largely the creation of white Americans. CMY+K: Black Creators in Comics, the new show in Star Clipper's gallery (6392 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-9110 or www.starclipper.com), demonstrates just how multicultural comics have become with an exhibition of some of the finest local talent working in comics today. Artists displaying their work include Sean Frye, Kevin Johnson, Mike Harvey, J.R. Hogan and Bryan Edward Hill, and Damian Duffy and John Jennings, authors of the hardcover primer Black Comix: African American Independent Comics, Art and Culture who will be present to sign copies of their book. CMY+K opens with a free public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, February 25, and St. Louis' own hip-hop heroes Scripts 'N Screwz perform during the opening party.
