When ex-Page France leader Michael Nau shortened the painfully cute name Cotton Jones Basket Ride to just the first two words, he put a premium on the group's debt to the American folk-song tradition. Cotton Jones' 2010 album, Tall Hours in the Glowstream, is a lo-fi and languid excursion on which collaborator and wife Whitney McGraw rock the raft with vaudevillian vocal brio and organ pumping. In turn, Nau channels Will Oldham's seductive creepiness and surrenders to strings that sound sampled from wax cylinders. The album's defining tune, "Somehow to Keep It Going," is a love song to the great American folk river, harmonized over misty reverb and the slow, scary thump of a floor tom. The latter sounds like the clunk-clunk of the last woodpecker reverberating through the last forest.
