Last year, Dublin pop-rockers the Coronas overcame the U2 complex by beating out that band's No Line on the Horizon (as well as Snow Patrol's Up to Now) for the Meteor Award, Ireland's equivalent of a Grammy. Led by long-lashed Danny O'Reilly (son of Mary Black), the young quartet makes jangly, genuine-voiced guitar rock that sounds like the Kooks covering the Gin Blossoms. The lads teamed up with producer John Cornfield (Muse, Razorlight, Oasis) to create their winning second album, Tony Was an Ex-Con, which takes its title from a deranged bus driver the band had on its last U.S. tour. Although the Coronas may be getting used to awards and arenas after a recent tour with the Script, this road trip is full of headlining dates at small clubs such as the Duck Room. It's a chance for the Coronas to gain fans — or at least more stories.
