Bang On

With the Southern Graphics Council in town for the weekend, there are a host of seminars and panels on the fine art of printmaking. One of the more interesting colloquies is of a more informal — even renegade — nature. The Printbanger's Ball is a gathering of artists, printers, hoochie-coochie dancers, drunkards, reprobates, merchant seamen and musicians, all presided over by bad man Tom Huck. It's an alcohol-fueled, inky-and-stinky type gathering for people who love the smell of mineral spirits in the morning. Atomic Cowboy (4140 Manchester Avenue; www.evilprints.com) hosts the gathering starting at 9 p.m., and admission is $5 at the door. Inside you'll find a bazaar of affordable prints (priced at $50 or less) crafted by the big names of printing (Wolfbat Studio, Sean StarWars, the Hancock Brothers and Huck's own Evil Prints) and by new-name up-and-comers, a burlesque show, print raffles and a performance by Johnny Cash tribute band One More Round. Come on out to have a good time, buy some art and throw back a couple drinks with the hardest-working printers in the business.
