The Journey Continues

BandTogether, St. Louis' GLBTA concert band, began in 1997 with a handful of members who wanted to maintain their musical skills and also march in that year's Pride Parade. Fourteen years later, the group boasts more than 100 musicians from all walks of life, and their skill as an ensemble is very fine indeed. Tonight at 8 p.m. at the 560 Music Center (560 Trinity Avenue, University City; www.bandtogetherstl.com), BandTogether celebrates its anniversary with a performance entitled Transcendent Journey. The program tells the history of the band as individuals and a group, charting the ups and downs of an all-volunteer community concert band. Highlights of the evening include Mozart's Concerto in B Flat Major for bassoon (featuring soloist Phil Wilhelm) and Debussy's magnificent Engulfed Cathedral. There will also be a selection or two from The Sound of Music. As always, admission to BandTogether's concerts is free, but you can (and should) donate a few bucks; they're playing for you as well as themselves, after all.
