The oxymoronic "Bluegrass Ball" — bluegrassers are often sharp-dressed men and women, but coats and tails aren't country — features a dance card jammed with youthful maestros of mandolin, banjo and those high and lonesome harmonies that can make the most reluctant wallflower give a reel a whirl. Led by the backing band (and sons) of Del McCoury, the Travelin' McCourys (Ronnie and Rob), this two-night event is like a campfire picking party in hillbilly hippie heaven, an occasion for song swapping by Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band, Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon and, finally, Head For the Hills, the least-known and most jam-band-friendly of this bluegrass bunch. If you're weary counting the days to summer festival season, jump-start your jones this weekend.
