To the victor go the SXSW runoff spoils. Brooklyn neophytes Cult of Youth are bound to make a splash in Austin, but lucky St. Louis gets to see the band twice this spring, first at Apop Records and later supporting Sacred Bones labelmate Zola Jesus at the Billiken Club in April. Maximal folk music for the apocalypse — or perhaps Cold Cave for the Tom Waits set — Cult of Youth is staking a claim in the goth-wave revival. The band's densely packed arrangements pair Turkish influences and Celtic punk with strummtulescent pagan rite music. Swans' Kevin McMahon mixed its 2010 self-titled album, and the result is post-industrial of a different color — the careening energy of Gogol Bordello and post-industrial sea shanties informed by the depressive menace of Death in June.
