Lydia Loveless

9 p.m. Wednesday, April 6. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

Chicago insurgent country label Bloodshot may be grooming Lydia Loveless to pick up where twang angels Kelly Hogan and Neko Case left off, but the young Columbus, Ohio, native is a harder country singer than either. She takes a no-frills, back-to-the-barroom approach that recalls the early alt-country sound — all pedal steel, fiddle and Telecaster — of Robbie Fulks. With a shivering vibrato and songs that split the difference between sincerity and over-the-top satire ("My daddy shot the only man I ever loved," she sings on the original song "The Only Man," and then proceeds to set off a family bloodbath), Loveless isn't afraid to indulge in the archetypes of country music — or to drink you under the table as another Loretta Lynn song spins on a honky-tonk jukebox she knows inside and out.
