When talk turns from the Real Housewives to Abraham Lincoln — what? Like that couldn't happen? Those women are honest, right? — you're going to need some quick facts about the sixteenth president at your disposal, some nuggets of detail that show more depth than a mere mention of his presidential beard or unmistakable hat. Sure, you could look a few things up on the ol' Internet or make a day trip to Springfield, Illinois, for a tour of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum. Both good ideas. Or you could land somewhere in the middle with Voices of the Civil War, a living-history event in Alton, Illinois. During this educational occasion, costumed actors take up spots at seven points along the Lincoln & Civil War Legacy Trail to share stories about the great man and his visits to this part of the state. The presentations happen every fifteen minutes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and participation costs $10; tickets can be purchased at the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau (200 Piasa Street; 800-258-6645). And note: The trail is available for the exploring at any time, but the costumed storytellers are there today only. Download a trail guide at www.visitalton.com.
