The fourth annual QFest offers a range of fictional and documentary films that portray the wide range of gay and lesbian lifestyles as something other than the witty best friend or stereotypical neighbor with great taste. Whether you're interested in the gritty world of older lesbians with noirish secret pasts that return with unexpected violence (The Owls), short subject examinations of gay culture right here in St. Louis ("Just Like Anyone Else: St. Louis After Stonewall") or the plight of the gay man's best female friend as she creeps toward spinsterhood (Violet Tendencies, which stars Mindy Cohn of Facts of Life fame), Qfest has a film for you. The festival runs from Thursday through Sunday (April 14 through 17) at the Hi-Pointe Theatre (1005 McCausland Avenue; www.cinemastlouis.org/qfest). Admission to the red-carpet, opening-night party is $20 and includes beer, wine and food from Pi Pizzeria as well as your ticket to The Sons of Tennessee Williams, Tim Wolff's documentary about the gay Mardi Gras krewes of New Orleans. Tickets to individual films are $10 to $12.
