Although Brian Wilson is the indubitable master of hiding melancholy in pop hooks, the Raveonettes exalt theirs in a similar fashion. Amid swaths of Jesus and Mary Chain distortion and gritty guitar lies the perfect chorus, impeccably informed by the '60s and improved by the '80s and '90s. The Danish pop duo has spawned a legion of copycats; its influence is smeared all over the indie darlings of today, from Best Coast and the Vaccines to Dum Dum Girls. Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner release their fifth studio album, Raven in the Grave, on April 5, and it's slower and more sophisticated than the stuff the Raveonettes first churned out. The dynamite first single, "Forget That You're Young," is a tantalizing elegy that'll leave you salivating for more.
