The first poem in David Clewell's new book is called "This Poem Had Better Be about the World We Actually Live In." That's not true. It's preceded by another piece called "The Accomplice," but the long title is better because it says what we mean. He's not saying it should matter; he's saying it had better matter, because otherwise what's the point, right? It matters. Clewell is the poet laureate of Missouri, the state you live in unless you don't live in this state, and he's reading with Chris King (he matters) at 8 p.m. this evening at the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard; stlouispoetrycenter.org/observable) as part of the St. Louis Poetry Center's Observable Reading Series. It's free. It's free! It's Monday, and you can listen to them and chew on it and then mosey down the street for something to eat.
