Nobody knows where genius comes from. You cant point at the spot on a persons head where all the great ideas come from, or measure the ergs of imagination being output by someones subconscious. But there are times when the genius is undeniably present. Jim Hensons Labyrinth is one of those instances. Hensons name is your first clue youre in for something special, but then comes Brian Frouds otherworldly design work for the goblins and their chthonic kingdom, and David Bowie is the pansexual cherry on top. Jennifer Connelly aint ruining things, either. This kids movie/adventure flick/musical/family film/cult classic follows Sarahs (Connelly) quest to recover her crybaby younger brother Toby from Jareth, the Goblin King (Bowie); to do this, she must pass through a labyrinth in less than thirteen hours. Along the way she encounters all sorts of goblins, makes some new friends and learns just how powerful she really is. James Campbell would recognize it as a heros journey of self-discovery, but its a good time no matter how you slice it. The Reel Late film series drops you into the Labyrinth at midnight Friday and Saturday (May 27 through June 4) at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-995-6270). Tickets are $7.
Fridays, Saturdays. Starts: May 27. Continues through June 4, 2011
