Blankety-Blank City
Celine Danhier's documentary Blank City transports viewers to that seemingly magical time in 1970s New York City when rent was affordable and the driven young destitute managed to fill their time by creating films, art, bands and a subculture that still resonates today. Featuring interviews with Fab 5 Freddy, John Waters, Jim Jarmusch, Deborah Harry, Thurston Moore and Steve Buscemi, Blank City charts the birth and rampant youth of the two stereotypically New York cinematic movements: No Wave Cinema and the Cinema of Transgression. With contributions from indie cine legends Amos Poe, Susan Seidelman, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd, Danhier’s film returns you to the era that John Waters described as, “Right at the height of debauchery in New York City.” Blank City screens at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday (June 3 through 5) in Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is $5 to $6.
