You Don't Sayles
Whether he’s writing a screenplay, directing a film or penning a novel, John Sayles doesn’t shy away from the big issues. The brilliant and accomplished screenwriter-director-author tackles racism, sexism, xenophobia, corruption – and baseball – with acerbic wit and lyrical grace. Perhaps known best for the films Eight Men Out and Lone Star, Sayles deserves equal acclaim for his literary efforts. His latest novel, A Moment in the Sun, covers a broad swath of American history and sheds light on some of our more craven acts. The story takes place in 1897 and includes everything from the Yukon Gold Rush to the attempted colonization of the Philippines to the assassination of President McKinley. Hear Sayles read from his new work tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Moore Auditorium on the campus of Webster University (470 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves). Presented by Pudd’nhead Books and Cinema St. Louis, this reading and signing is free to the public.
