For those who claim St. Louis lacks any relevant culture, our abundance of film festivals say otherwise. Perennial favorite the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival returns for five days (Sunday, June 12, through Thursday, June 16), with an array of films from around the world that offer interesting and unusual perspectives on the Jewish experience. The festival opens with Sunday screenings (at 4:15 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.) of Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story, a Dustin Hoffman-narrated documentary about great Jewish ballplayers such as the beloved Sandy Koufax, as well as St. Louis natives Ken Holtzman and Art Shamsky. Of particular interest are the documentaries, including Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny, about Churchill’s outspoken opposition to the Nazi regime; and Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray, which explores the little-known facts of Jewish involvement in the American Civil War on both sides of the divide.
