Soul baring and indie rock don't normally go hand-in-hand — save that pap for the singer-songwriters and stick to carefully postured rocking, please. The Antlers, however, successfully walks the thin line between cathartic confessionals and straight-shooting, melodic pop. The out-of-the-blue success of 2009's Hospice led to many theories about Peter Silberman's album-length allegory of physical and emotional sickness. (Check comments on the band's YouTube videos for plenty of armchair analysis on songs like "Bear.") The sometimes claustrophobic, sometimes booming moments of Hospice get a more nuanced, occasionally trip-hoppy vibe on this year's Burst Apart. This time around, Silberman and Co. are less concerned with cataloguing trauma in long-form narratives and more content with crystallized moments of bright, tremulous pop music.
