Carnivals Are Part of our Heritage

If you plan strategically, you can hit an Independence Day celebration every day of this three-day weekend. A good place to start is the O’Fallon Heritage & Freedom Festival, which takes place Saturday through Monday (July 2 through 4) at the Ozzie Smith Sports Complex (900 T.R. Hughes Boulevard, O’Fallon; www.heritageandfreedomfest.com). Saturday is ideal for this one, because Saturday is Special Family Night from 2 to 5 p.m., which means discounted prices on tickets for the carnival rides. You want to max out your time on the Tilt-A-Whirl before you hit the food stands on the Midway; there’s a whole lot of funnel cakes, snow cones and other fair fare just waiting to get ate up. There is no fireworks display on Saturday, however, so you’ll need to come back on Sunday and Monday if you love the smell of black powder in the evening. Admission to the O’Fallon Heritage & Freedom Festival is free, but bring cash for carnival ride tickets and concessions.
