Saxophonist Richard Elliot first gained wide public attention in the 1980s as featured soloist with the long-running Oakland, California, funk band Tower of Power. Though his early recordings as a leader got mixed reviews, Elliot's career took off with the rise of the smooth-jazz radio format, which provided a suitable home for his gutsy yet relatively straightforward instrumental covers of soul and R&B hits. Elliot has stayed busy, touring incessantly as a headliner, as part of package shows like Jazz Attack and with trumpeter Rick Braun as RnR. This summer, he's sharing a bill with the George Benson-inspired guitarist and singer Norman Brown, who formerly teamed with Braun and saxophonist Kirk Whalum in the band BWB.
