The apocryphal phrase "let them eat cake," often attributed to Marie Antoinette, carries with it a sense of obliviousness to the everyday plebeians; rich, decadent cake will do when the bread rations have run dry, right? The city of Maplewood has reclaimed and recast the phrase for its annual Let Them Eat Art fete, but for this pre-Bastille Day event, art is for all comers and not just the swells. This evening, Maplewood becomes an egalitarian paradise of live music, open-air art, street dancing and even a costume contest (bonus points if you come dressed a member of the deposed French nobility!). Maplewood's celebrated shops and restaurants will be open for your perusal as well. The party runs from 6 to 11 p.m., and is centered on the heart of downtown Maplewood (7300 Manchester Road). Admission is free, but bring money for treats, eats and other delights. For more information, visit www.cityofmaplewood.com.
