The subgenre "new folk" or "neo folk" arises from the generation gap between grizzled keepers of the Greenwich Village flame and the songsters born too late to care what Pete Seeger's purism was about. The word "nostalgia" is often used for both, but in the case of Sarah Jarosz it hardly applies. On her 2011 album, Follow Me Down, the twenty-year-old sounds like the healer of the divide between fans of Alison Krauss and the Civil Wars, enlisting members of Krauss' band Union Station for a set of broad-minded bluegrass. Jarosz makes Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" glide on a refreshed melody and demonstrates her mandolin chops on mathematically elegant instrumentals like "Peace." Her Duck Room debut is a must for lovers of new and old folk alike.
